As offices have closed around the world and employees were stuck in other countries, and now the U.S. and other countries try to slowly reopen where possible, business owners and employees struggle with a multitude of issues. Maintaining safety amidst this new normal, how to get back to the old normal, and how to continue to work in multiple countries and states are all big issues. The days of face-to-face meetings, training, and short-term on-site work assignments are still questionable. Boarding a plane for a foreign country could actually end up with employees reboarding and returning to the U.S. Then there are the quarantine issues to deal with… Welcome to the new world of business, whether it’s working from home or elsewhere.  The challenges and uncertainty faced by employees and business owners are replicated in the global and state payroll tax and reporting world.

The employee who was going to be in Germany for less than 90 days but got stuck in-country for more than 7 months, how do we deal with the foreign tax ramifications of that?

What are the ramifications to the employee as an individual and to you as the employer responsible for remitting and reporting state or foreign country income tax?

What triggers were unintentionally crossed in other states and countries, such as unemployment, disability, and locality taxes on that employee?

That employee who previously worked in New York, but is now working from home in Maryland…how do we handle that?  The decision tree can be a daunting climb, and the technology and awareness required to match the compliance requirements can be equally challenging. So how do you approach this?
